The GSD yesterday described the Redibike scheme as an “expensive flop”.
In a statement, the party questioned whether the scheme offered value for money given it had “performed so poorly in its first year of operation”.
The GSD said it had been monitoring the scheme’s usage throughout the first year through questions in Parliament.
While figures were consistently low, it accepted the Gibraltar Government’s view that Redibikes should be given some time to be assessed.
However, the GSD added that figures published last week showed that daily usage averaged fewer than five journeys.
Given that the scheme costs £12,000 per month, that meant each journey cost nearly £90, a figure that the GSD said did not represent value for money to the tax payer.
“Government withdrew the previous Gibibike scheme claiming that it was an expensive mistake and then announced their own Redibike scheme before the last election in 2015,” said Trevor Hammond, GSD spokesman for the environment and transport.
“They said they would be ready by early 2016 though it took until May 2017 to become operational.”
“The Minister, from the very beginning, was at pains to point out the scheme was sponsored, never mentioning the costs and thus implying that these were negligible.”
