GWA highlights Spanish workers’ pay dispute

The Gibraltar Women’s Association has called for a tough stance on any situation where workers employed by companies from outside Gibraltar are not paid.

The GWA was reacting after a group of Spanish workers demonstrated outside Ocean Spa Plaza last week over lack of payments.

While that situation appears to have been resolved, the GWA said steps should be taken to avoid any repetition.

“We would like to highlight that when businesses do not pay their workers it effects whole families,” the association said in a statement.

“We encourage the relevant authorities to take a hard line on such incidences. These kind of issues should not be allowed to happen again.”

“In this day and age and in Gibraltar where workers are contracted under Gibraltar law this is not acceptable.”

“We therefore urge the Government and both unions, GGCA and Unite, to work together to firstly investigate what happened. Secondly we need to stop this ever happening again.”

“No person should ever be expected to work without pay – no matter from what country they live in.”

Basic human right for workers is to get paid for an honest day’s work. These men have families and need to buy food, necessities and need to pay their bills.

“This may be acceptable in other countries but not in our Gibraltar.”
