Police officers will be able to conduct roadside tests on suspected drunk drivers as from tomorrow, in a move that will waste less time for public and officers alike.
At present, people suspected of drink driving have to be conveyed to New Mole House station for a breathalyser test.
But new kits to be introduced tomorrow will speed up the process and allow for on-the-spot checks.
The kits, called the Dräger Alcotest, were on display at a ‘binge drinking’ awareness day held at Casemates Square yesterday.
The Christmas awareness campaign was organised by the Gibraltar Government Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Services together with the Royal Gibraltar Police, the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service, Social Services and the Gibraltar Health Authority.
The Alcotest devices deliver instant results with the exact amount of alcohol in a person’s system.
