A goal on either side of half time gave Belgium victory over Gibraltar’s Under 17 in the first match of the UEFA under 17 European championship Group 11 tournament played in Cyprus. A goal in the 25th minute yesterday saw Belgium move into the lead.
Gibraltar was to have its opportunities with a strike at goal from a free kick hitting the woodwork from Britto. Peacock also had his chances alongside Avellano. Belgium scored their second on the 63rd as Gibraltar were pinned back into their half. Hanklin produced several good saves to keep the score at 2-0.
Gibraltar although defending in the final 20 minutes showed composure in their game. Even though tired from the travelling and without many minutes of football under their belt Gibraltar produced a good result in a match they were expected to face a tough opposition and the potential of a heavy defeat.
Belgium’s record at international level in this category being far superior from Gibraltar’s.
