Archive Tour

The Chief Minister has paid a visit to the Gibraltar National Archives, hosted by Archivist Antony Pitaluga, where he saw for himself the range and extent of Gibraltar’s documentary records.  The Chief Minister was able to use the Archives’ search facility to find references to the Picardo family and found such references going back as far as 1836. He also examined engineering drawings for the construction of building such as South Barracks, Jumpers Bastion and even for the building of gallows and cells for condemned criminals.  Mr Picardo also saw how little things had changed when he stopped to study files named ‘Violation of British waters by Spanish Coastguards, July 1891.’

The Chief Minister said: “The people of Gibraltar can be assured that the documentary history of the Rock is in excellent hands: it is being catalogued and developed by Archives staff who are absolutely devoted to their work.”
