Midfielder Liam Walker was named FIFA’s “player of the day” on Tuesday having scored Gibraltar’s first goal in its first ever European Qualifying Group match for the World Cup.
Gibraltar played against Greece in Faro losing by 4 goals to 1. Walker who recently moved to Europa FC from rivals Lincoln Red Imps scored an equalising goal on the 26th minute of play.
The FIFA website said: “Player of the day – Gibraltar midfielder Liam Walker made history when he scored an equaliser at 1-1 in the match against Greece, netting his country’s first-ever goal in a competitive FIFA match. Unfortunately his joy was short-lived, as the Ethniki scored three times in three minutes to reach their eventual winning scoreline of 4-1 by the end of the first half.”
