Two Guardia Civil officers narrowly escaped being run over by a smuggler after they stumbled on a drug operation in La Linea on the road leading to the border.
The officers challenged a large group of men who were loading bales of cannabis resin into three cars parked on the pavement on the Avenida de España adjacent to the beach.
Three of the men jumped into the vehicles and drove off, while the others in the group dispersed chased by the two officers on foot.
One of the vehicles then swung back and rammed the empty Guardia Civil vehicle repeatedly before trying to run the two officers over, forcing to jump over the wall onto the beach for safety.
An investigation is under way to establish the identity of the driver, who is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder for trying to intentionally run over the officers.
A total of 266 kilos of cannabis resin were recovered from the seafront pavement.
