A local student has created a series of ‘monkey proof’ recycling bins which have been placed around the Rock.
Jared Peralta designed the bins two years ago as a project for his Design and Technology A-level at Bayside School.
The bins have been placed in four locations including Trafalgar Cemetery, Queens Balcony, Apes Den and Princess Caroline’s Battery.
Mr Peralta told the Chronicle the idea came after he was given an open brief and told to develop and manufacture a product which fulfils a local problem.
“After careful thinking I realised that there were no monkey-proof bins in the Upper Rock where the monkeys were not only destroying the bins and leaving rubbish littered everywhere, they were also developing illnesses such as diabetes from eating the high sugar foods in the bins,” he said.
“Therefore I set out conceptualising and developing a monkey-proof bin until I realised another crucial necessity. There were no recycling facilities present in the upper rock.”
