MoD confirms ‘non-nuclear maintenance’ on US submarine

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that ‘non-nuclear maintenance work’ has been carried out on the US Navy submarine USS Newport News over the past week.

The MoD confirmed the repairs in a statement issued jointly with the Gibraltar Government following concerns raised by environmental groups here and in Spain.

“We can confirm that, during a pre-planned and routine visit to Gibraltar, USS Newport News is undergoing some un-planned, non-nuclear maintenance work,” the joint statement said.

“Some of the spares required to undertake this work have had to be flown in, which is why this work is taking place over a period of a few days.”
