Leading gaming company Bet365 was forced to suspend betting on Wednesday’s Rock Cup football match after it mistook Red Imps FC, a reserve side, for 13-time league champions Lincoln Red Imps.
The gaming company had offered odds of 17-1 for Gibraltar United FC to win, thinking it was playing the top local side.
Many locals, aware of the error, were quick to place bets on Gibraltar United, knowing that it was likely to score a big win over the reserve team.
But when the bets started flowing in, Bet365 realised its mistake and suspended the betting just before midnight on Tuesday, the day before the match.
